On desktop computers, the main sections of the site can be accessed through the top menu.

In the FORUM:
On the left hand side you will see:
Your profile box (your picture, how many comments you’ve made etc).
’Start a New Discussion’ button
Post navigation menu (including bookmarks and your drafts)
Active discussions (the discussions that have been updated recently, showing the last person who commented)
Pages (inc community guidelines, getting help & support etc)
IN ‘YOU’ (AKA YOUR PROFILE)
To access your profile, click on ‘YOU’ on the menu bar or on your image/name.
Edit your profile by clicking on the green ‘edit profile’ button. From here you will see a list of options. They include updating your ‘bio’, changing your image (the square picture that appears next to your name), remove image, edit account, change your password and set your preferences for email alerts.
If you are getting too many email alerts (or not enough) you can open up the ‘set preferences’ option when editing your profile.
You will see a list of options - including being emailed when you get a private message, when you’re mentioned in a discussion or when people start new discussions. Choose whichever you prefer. You can change them at any time.
Click on the section of the site most relevant to your post (e.g. Chill & Chat, Peer Support Space …).
Click on the ‘Start a New Discussion’ button.
Enter a title (add a content warning if needed … e.g. if it covers topics that may be difficult for others to read if they’re feeling a bit raw). A content warning looks like **CW: Self-Harm (or whatever topic)**)
Check the right category is selected.
Write the message (you can use any of the icons in the editor to add images, tweets, videos and make links to webpages)
Preview (check it looks OK)
Post Discussion (this posts the discussion to the forum)
If you want to edit/delete your post:
Navigate to the post and click on it. You should see a ‘…’ at the bottom of it. Click on the dots.
You can edit by clicking on the little pencil icon. You can delete by clicking on the dustbin.
This forum has all kinds of features that can help add to your post. You don’t need to use them, but it can be fun to experiment a little.
Here’s an overview:
Text effects (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough): Highlight a section of text and press the button to create the effect. You will see that the highlighted text is wrapped in something like this
Code: Shouldn’t be needed for this forum
Quote: If you want to quote someone else’s words the forum lets you link to the source (optional) and add the person’s name.
Type the quote
Highlight the quote
Click on the quote icon
In the pop up box add the source (web address if known) and the authors name (if wanted).
Click on Go
It wraps your quote in
[quote] … [/quote]
If you preview it you will see that it looks fancy.
Note: If you want to quote something someone has posted, highlight the bit you want to quote in their comment. You will see a ‘quote’ button appear near the text. Click on it and it will automatically enter it in to your message box.
List: If you want to create a bullet point list, type the list out (one line per point). Highlight it and then click on the list icon. You will see your list wrapped in [/code]
[/code] tags, with each line starting with
Image: If you want to add a picture to your post you can do it in two ways. If you want to add an image that is on a website, use this icon. If you click on the image icon it will open up a box that asks you to ‘paste the link to your image here’. This means you need to have found the url (web address) of the image … often right clicking on the image gives you the opportunity to find this.
If you want to add a picture from your computer, you need to use the ‘upload’ icon.
Link: If you want to add a link to a website that others can click on, click on the link icon. Write the web address and it will add the link to your message. If you would like the link to look like words (e.g. HVN Website) instead of the url, just add the desired text to the ‘Link text’ box.

Mention: If you want to ‘mention’ another forum user in your comment/post choose the @ icon. In the pop up box, start writing the username you want to mention - then choose the correct name from the list you see below.
Mentions show up in the person’s profile, so they should know that you’ve mentioned them. This can be useful if you’re replying to a specific person in a long thread of comments.
Media: You can embed audio and video from YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, SoundCloud, Vine, Twitch, Giphy, Imgur and Voxer, plus direct links to MP3 and MP4 files.
Just click on the camera icon, then paste the link to the media file of your choice (e.g. YouTube shareable link).
Insert Tweet: If you’d like to insert a tweet into your comment/post you just need to click on the twitter icon. Paste the tweet’s link (from the twitter page) and click on ‘go’.
Upload: Once you have posted 3 times, you are allowed to upload images etc. Upload allows you to post images that are on your computer. Clicking on this icon will open up your file browser. Choose the image you want (please be mindful of people’s page load times - and our hosting package space) and use images that are reasonably sized (e.g. not 3MB).
You can also drag and drop images directly into the message area. They will be uploaded and inserted automatically.
Disk icon: The disk icon simply lets you know that the forum has saved a draft of your post. If you need to access it later, look in your drafts folder (in the menu on the left hand side of the page).
Smilies: As with most social media these days, you can add smilies to your post/comment. Just click on the smiley face to see those available.
1. When a discussion or conversation is greyed out, it means there are no new messages since you last read it.
2. If you haven't read a whole thread yet, the forum remembers which page you're on.
3. You can choose which subjects appear in your All Discussions feed. Go to the Categories page and uncheck the categories you don't want to see.
4. Quickly jump to the top of the page by clicking anywhere on the menu bar. If you're already at the top, you'll go to the bottom. If you've just quoted someone, you'll go back to their post so you can quote them again.
5. Double-click on the left-hand side of the page to go back. Double-click on the right-hand side to move one page forward.
6. When you add formatting to a post, you'll notice special tags being added, like
They're pretty easy to understand, so you might prefer to type them out yourself. That way you can style a post without interrupting your flow.
7. You can remove tags by hand, or select some text and click on the style you want to remove.
8. Keyboard shortcuts can make commenting easier. Ctrl+Enter submits your post, while many of the formatting features also have shortcuts. Hover over them with your mouse to find out what they are.
